A letter from Nuno

“Portuguese isn't just words and grammar. It's the sound of waves in the Algarve, the slang you hear in a Lisbon tasca, the poetry of Pessoa, the rhythm of a fado song. When I teach, I teach all of it, because a language without its culture is just a code. With its culture, it's a way of seeing the world.”

Olá, I'm Nuno

I'm a 35 year old Portuguese from Porto, a global citizen who's lived in Portugal, Brazil, Timor-Leste, and Costa Rica. Teaching and learning are my passions, and I bring that energy into every lesson.

With 9+ years and 200+ students worldwide, I've helped complete beginners reach B1, prepared students for CAPLE proficiency exams, and turned hesitant speakers into confident communicators.

When I'm not teaching, you'll find me drawing, painting, writing, or walking on the beach. I'm the kind of teacher who'll send you Portuguese film clips, poetry, and obscure comic book recommendations between lessons, because language is culture.

“One of the things that makes me most proud is seeing my students become independent in their use of Portuguese.”

Real words from real students

★★★★★

“Nuno is a fantastic teacher. In addition to being an expert in Portuguese grammar, he is extremely patient, encouraging, well organised and creative. His complete fluency in English is also a crucial asset. He was instrumental in helping me prepare for and do quite well on Portugal's B1 exam.”

★★★★★

“I started working with Nuno in June 2021. I didn't know any Portuguese at all. After a month I wanted to quit because it felt too hard. Nuno offered to tutor me so I could keep up. He encouraged me and explained things so well that learning became fun. Because of him I stuck with learning and now I am a B1 level.”

★★★★★

“Nuno stands out from other teachers because he has a real understanding of linguistics and how languages work. Students feel they are not only learning the language but learning about the culture, the history, the people and the idiosyncrasies of Portugal. When Nuno left the language school, many of his students asked him to continue teaching them individually.”

★★★★★

“I started learning Portuguese from zero with him back in June 2021 through a language school, and by the time I moved to Portugal in September, I was able to communicate with people with no problems at all. His classes are well balanced. Proper grammar, but also how people normally talk, the slang, the common errors. Highly recommended.”

★★★★★

“Nuno is by far the best language teacher I've ever met. I don't want to share him with other students but there is only so many hours in the day. I've been learning with him for 3 years, he always makes lessons fun and engaging. I actually never thought I'd be able to speak another language but through his persistent encouragement, it's become a reality.”

★★★★★

“Such an excellent teacher it makes me wish he spoke every language on Earth so everyone can book him. Great understanding of Portuguese grammar along with Spanish counterparts which helps make the language less confusing, combined with great stories, resources, and cultural context.”

Questions learners ask before booking

Do you teach European or Brazilian Portuguese?

European Portuguese only. I'm from Porto, and I teach the Portuguese spoken in Portugal. That means the pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and cultural references you actually need if you're moving to Portugal, applying for citizenship, or visiting family there.

Do you prepare students for the CIPLE and CAPLE exams?

Yes. CIPLE is the A2 exam most people need for Portuguese citizenship. I also prepare students for the other CAPLE levels, DEPLE (B1), DIPLE (B2), DAPLE (C1), and DUPLE (C2). We work through the exam format, timed writing tasks, listening drills, and oral interview practice. Read the full CIPLE A2 prep guide.

Do I need to speak Portuguese to get a D7 visa?

You don't need Portuguese for the D7 visa application itself. You do need it later, by your fifth year of residency, when you apply for permanent residency or citizenship. Starting early makes the A2 exam far less stressful and helps you settle in faster. Read the full D7 Portuguese guide. How much you actually need day to day depends on where you live.

How long does it take to reach A2 Portuguese for citizenship?

Most committed adult learners reach A2 in 8 to 12 months with a weekly lesson and regular practice between sessions. You can get there faster with two lessons a week. Every learner is different, and I'll assess your starting point in the first session.

How do your lessons work?

Lessons run by Zoom, one to one or in small groups. Each session starts with relaxed conversation, then moves into grammar and vocabulary tailored to your level. After class I send you a tailored review pack with vocabulary, audio of key phrases, and short readings from exactly what we covered.

What do lessons cost?

Lessons start from £39 per session. Group lessons are cheaper per person. I offer packages for exam prep and long term learners. Contact me and I'll put together a plan that fits your goals and budget.

Is European Portuguese harder than Brazilian Portuguese?

European Portuguese pronunciation is harder to understand at first because we drop vowel sounds and speak quickly. Grammar is broadly similar. The good news is that once your ear adjusts, you can understand Brazilian Portuguese easily. Starting with European Portuguese gives you both.
