Nota cultural

In Portugal, the bread, butter and olives at the start of a meal are called the couvert, and they are almost never free. A good waiter asks before bringing them, exactly as this one does, because you can decline and pay only for what you actually order. Notice too that the second client asks for a coffee instead of a dessert. That is completely normal here, where a small black coffee, a bica in Lisbon or a cimbalino in Porto, is the natural way to end a meal.
