Uma casa com história

Quando a minha irmã decidiu mudar-se para uma casa antiga na cidade, confesso que não percebi muito bem a escolha.When my sister decided to move into an old house in the city, I have to admit I did not really understand the choice. A casa tinha mais de cem anos e precisava de algumas obras.The house was over a hundred years old and needed work. As janelas não fechavam bem, a canalização era bastante antiga e havia caixas espalhadas por quase todas as divisões.The windows did not shut properly, the plumbing was very old and there were boxes spread through almost every room. Além disso, o sótão estava cheio de objetos que pertenciam aos antigos moradores.On top of that, the attic was full of things belonging to the previous owners.

Por um lado, a casa tinha várias desvantagens. Era pequena, tinha pouca luz natural e o isolamento das paredes deixava bastante a desejar. No inverno, era difícil manter os quartos quentes e, no verão, a casa ficava abafada. Por outro lado, havia coisas que dificilmente se encontram numa casa moderna: tetos altos, portas de madeira maciça e uns azulejos antigos na cozinha que estavam muito bem conservados. Ao mesmo tempo, a casa ficava numa zona muito central, perto de lojas, cafés e transportes públicos.On one hand the house had several drawbacks. It was small, it got little natural light and the insulation in the walls left a lot to be desired. In winter it was hard to keep the bedrooms warm, and in summer the house turned stuffy. On the other hand it had things you rarely find in a modern house. High ceilings, solid wood doors and some old tiles in the kitchen that were beautifully preserved. At the same time, the house was very central, close to shops, cafés and public transport.

A primeira semana foi bastante cansativa. A minha irmã tinha planeado começar pelas obras, mas rapidamente percebeu que antes disso era preciso arrumar tudo. Passámos dois dias a separar objetos: algumas coisas foram para o lixo, outras foram doadas e outras ficaram guardadas. Encontrámos livros, fotografias, ferramentas e até uma velha máquina de escrever. Havia também uma quantidade absurda de caixas vazias. Ninguém sabia exatamente porque é que estavam ali.The first week was exhausting. My sister had planned to start with the building work, but she quickly realised everything had to be cleared out first. We spent two days sorting through things. Some went in the bin, some were given away and some were put into storage. We found books, photographs, tools and even an old typewriter. There was also an absurd number of empty boxes. Nobody knew exactly why they were there.

Depois de arrumarmos a casa, começámos finalmente a tratar das obras.Once the house was clear we finally started on the work itself. O primeiro problema foi a cozinha.The first problem was the kitchen. Os azulejos estavam bonitos, mas alguns estavam partidos e era impossível substituí-los por outros exatamente iguais.The tiles were lovely, but some were broken and it was impossible to replace them with ones exactly the same. Por isso, em vez de trocar toda a parede, a minha irmã decidiu aproveitar os azulejos antigos e colocar apenas alguns novos numa zona diferente.So instead of redoing the whole wall, my sister decided to keep the old tiles and put a few new ones in a different spot. No final, a combinação ficou bastante interessante.In the end the combination turned out rather well.

As obras demoraram mais do que estávamos à espera.The work took longer than we expected. De facto, cada vez que resolvíamos um problema, aparecia outro.In fact, every time we solved one problem another appeared. Um dia era uma torneira que começava a pingar; no dia seguinte era uma tomada que deixava de funcionar.One day a tap started dripping, the next a socket stopped working. Chegámos a pensar que tínhamos cometido um erro ao escolher aquela casa.We got to the point of thinking we had made a mistake choosing that house. No entanto, pouco a pouco, a casa começou a ganhar outra vida.Little by little, though, the house began to come alive again.

Agora, alguns meses depois, já quase não parece a mesma casa.Now, a few months on, it barely looks like the same house. Ainda há coisas por acabar, mas a maior parte das divisões está arrumada e conseguimos aproveitar muito melhor o espaço.There are still things left to finish, but most of the rooms are sorted and we make far better use of the space. A minha irmã diz que, apesar de todo o trabalho, valeu a pena.My sister says that, for all the work, it was worth it. Eu continuo a achar que teria escolhido uma casa mais simples.I still think I would have chosen something simpler. Mas, até gostei de participar nas obras — desde que não tenha de voltar a passar dois dias a arrumar aquele sótão.But I did enjoy being part of the renovation, as long as I never have to spend two days clearing that attic again.
